My son is 5 years old and in Kindergarten. He is off school today for Martin Luther King Jr Day. This morning I made a point to have a conversation with him about Martin Luther King. I asked him what he learned in school.
The first thing he told me was that Martin Luther King was shot in the back and is dead. I asked him if his teacher told him that and he told me no that another student told him that. He said that his Kindergarten teacher told him that people treated him bad and that when MLK Jr was a kid people still treated him bad.
My 5 year old then told me how brown people use to sit on the back of the bus. He said there “were different laws for brown and peach people” and MLK Jr wanted to make the same laws for brown and peach people.
I tried asking him about civil rights. I don’t think they used that terminology in class because he didn’t understand. I also asked about “blacks and whites”, and he said that they used the colors brown and peach. I thought that was awesome personally because why is it black and white anyways?! I have peach skin, not white.
What did your 5 year old learn? I do plan on reading the book Martin’s Big Words and educating my son more about Martin Luther King. We also live in Atlanta so we definitely could do some more activities and field trips.

That’s awesome that he was learning about Martin Luther King! I asked Sonny and he said they didn’t talk about MLK at school last week. http://www.wegivebooks.org/books/free-at-last has a book on him I think I will read with Sonny later.
